La Sirenita
The fourth and final part of my North Colombian adventure: SCUBA DIVING!
After Cuidad Perdida and Tayrona back to back, all I wanted IN LIFE was a goddamn shower, some decent junk food, and a comfy bed with a hole-free, non-stinky mozzie net. (Is that so much to ask?)
So I went to tiny, dusty, sleepy Taganga, a beach town cut into a tiny mountainous inlet and just a 5km collectivo ride from...

Jurassic Park
[The second part of my North Colombian “detox” story was my insane Lost City trek, which I’ve already described. (Part one was adventure time in San Gil.) The third and element of my solo traveling in Colombia was Parque Tayrona.]
After the Lost City all I wanted was a hot shower and a night’s sleep in anything but a hammock. And maybe also some way to exfoliate all that...

Deadly(ish) San Gil
After a month of Adventures in Bartending and Late Nights in Bogota, I needed a detox. I found one in the north of Colombia, first with a stop in San Gil, the country’s “adventure” capital.
I stayed in a craphole of a hostel (note: most hostels in Colombia are not “indoors”—all the rooms basically open to a central patio with no roof. So you’re exposed...

So we went to this famous mud volcano outside of Cartagena.
Travis, Ben and I followed the crowd as they climbed this unstable looking, muck-filled pile of dirt and jumped on in.
I asked several people involved with the operation why people do this. They kept saying “It’s therapeutic, its good for you.” I would ask, “How?” and was answered pretty much every time...

Dear El Travel Blog Readers,
My South American adventure is like so totally omg over. Sadly. But I’m back in New York! It’s awesome! And expensive! More on all that later. I still have a ton of things I never covered that I’ll try to post up over the next few weeks. Like, Argentina. And my (second, much crazier) return to lovely Bogota. And the Colombian coast. And San Gil. Ok. GO!

Dona Cessi's
One thing I loved most in Bogota was an absolute hole-in-the-wall tienda bar owned by a mean old lady. We called it Dona Cessi’s, because Lady Cessi is a Dona (old lady business owner).
Anyhow, it’s loud as hell and painted this horrendous color of orange. The crowd is a strange mix of local college hipsters, groups of drunk old men, a handful of gringos, and couples making out...

Cartagena
Cartagena was a long, long time ago. Obviously, I’m still playing catch up.
There were three highlights of our time in the city—one was that Ben came and took lots of beautiful photos. A second was the beautiful, perfect, peaceful Rosario Islands. A third was the mud volcano.
We took a speed boat out to the Rosario Islands, where we sat around in our swimsuits, sipping glass...

Te Quiere Colombia
I’m not ready to leave! But alas, my visa is up and it’s time for Buenos Aires. I’ve spent the past week reading food blogs like this one and this one to get myself psyched up for all the amaaaaazing food I’m about to ingest.
I’ve made a reservation for Casa Saltshaker, a closed dinner party style restaurant in the house of the chef! Here’s a Reuters...

This type of thing happened more regularly than I care to admit. 180 hours is a lot of time spent riding buses together, just saying. Sometimes a girl just feels flossy flossy, ok?

Food I Miss
Today was one of those amazing “I-love-traveling-remember-everything-you’re-doing-right-now” days. They aren’t all like this, but today was nice.
I love the rugged hills surrounding Taganga’s disgusting beaches and the way everyone in Taganga just quietly, lazily chills, all, freaking, day.
But there is one nagging thing that, as I ate my 50th watery papaya of the...

SCUBA DIVING!
It’s basically just like this:
Only it feels like you’re wearing this:
PS: The town I’m in was profiled in NY Times this week: Ohai there Santa Marta. Evan, the owner of the hostel I’m at, is quoted at the end.

On Backpackers
Today Caroline and I discussed how I can spend my first few months back in New York reminding everyone that I went BACKPACKING IN SOUTH AMERICA.
Caroline: like, “oh, you lost your job? I remember when I used to care about the rat race…. back before I went BACKPACKING IN SOUTH AMERICA”
me: and starting every sentence with ¨WELL IN B.A. —-THATS BUENOS AIRES...
